Did you know that the United States is the world's single largest contributor to global warming, with average annual emissions of 19.6 tons per person?  That is nearly five times the world average of 3.9 tons per person. The impacts of climate change are too great to ignore, and we must do everything in our power to protect our future.

It clearly is time for all Americans to roll up their sleeves, to take steps to reduce emissions, to prepare for climate change, and to encourage others to do the same. Start with a few quick and easy steps.

Quick and Easy

  1. Check lights. Identify frequently used light fixtures that use incandescent bulbs; order fluorescent replacements bulbs
  2. Check the temperature setting on your water-heater. Reduce the setting to 120°F (typically the “warm” setting; or halfway between the low and medium settings), if it is not already set to that temperature.
  3. Check the settings on your appliances. Where the option is available – and is not already selected -- select the energy-saving setting on your refrigerator, dishwasher, washing machine and other major appliances.
  4. Check your thermostat settings. During the heating season, set the thermostat lower, especially at night or when rooms are unoccupied. During the cooling season, set the temperatures higher. If you have a programmable thermostat you can automate the daily settings.
  5. Check showerheads and faucets. Determine whether any of your showerheads are models that use more than 2.5 gallons per minute. If so, order low-flow showerheads. Similarly, verify that your bathroom and kitchen water faucets have aerators. Order an aerator for each faucet that does not have one and that can accommodate one. These steps will reduce your use of hot water – and your use of energy to heat that water.
  6. Turn off appliances that you are not using. Switch off TVs, computers, lights, etc. that are not being used and unplug items on “standby” (that use electricity even when not being used) , including TVs, video and audio systems, computers, and chargers (for cell-phones and other electronic equipment).
  7. Check car tires for proper inflation. This can improve gas mileage. The appropriate air pressure typically is listed on the door-pillar on the driver’s side, on the inside of the glove-compartment door or in the vehicle manual.
  8. Write a letter to one of your elected representatives at the local, state or Federal level. Tell them you believe climate change is important; and that you support the development and implementation of a climate action plan to reduce emissions and prepare for climate change impacts

Climate Change Pledges
To reduce your emissions further and to better prepare for climate change, pledge to do one or more of the following

  1. Learn more about your carbon emissions. There is much more you can do to reduce your household carbon emissions. Find out more about your emissions and where you can best reduce them by using an online “carbon calculator.” See the list maintained by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
  2. Commute by carpooling or using mass transit. Over a quarter of the vehicle-miles travelled by households are for commuting to and from work – usually with one person in the vehicle. Carpooling and mass transit are among options that offer big reductions in carbon emissions.
  3. Plan and combine trips. A lot of driving involves frequent trips nearby, to go shopping or run errands, for example. Plan and combine trips to reduce the miles you need to travel. Better yet, take someone with you so they can leave their car behind.
  4. Replace your vehicle with one with better mileage. For details go to http://www.greenercars.org/ or http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/Index.do
  5. Drive more efficiently. In particular, observe speed limits, avoid rapid acceleration and excessive breaking. Don’t drive aggressively.
  6. Switch to “green power.” Switch to electricity generated by energy sources with low – or no – routine emissions of carbon dioxide. Contact your electricity provider to find out about the “green power” options available to you.
  7. Insulate and seal your apartment or house. This will reduce emissions associated with both heating and cooling, two of the largest sources of residential carbon emissions.
  8. Replace older appliances with high-efficiency units
  9. Learn more about the potential impacts of climate change on your region.
  10. Learn more about potential weather-related emergencies in your area. Find out how you can reduce your vulnerability and how you can respond to each kind of emergency. Find out too about the plans government agencies may have in place.

Farewell Israel: Bush, Iran, and The Revolt of Islam

One of the most important questions of our time, especially in the post 9/11 world, is how we view the world of Islam. For those of us who view the world through Judeo/Christian lenses - our prophetic perspective can sometimes lead us to approach the subject of Islam too simplistically. There is another important question that we often overlook and that is how Islam views us. Such a question is imperative to understanding what is happening in our world today and as recent headlines loudly declared "Muslims now outnumber Catholics worldwide" - how will their worldview impact the culture, economy and politics of not only the Middle East but Europe and America as well.

Farewell Israel: Bush, Iran and The Revolt of Islam is an historic journey, from the birth of Islam, through its 1,200 year reign over the civilized world, to the last 300 years of Islamic decline, overtaken and dominated by the West - then humiliated by a Jewish state. Islam's historic trials with Jews, and its relationship with conquered non-believers, help illustrate the Islamic world view - all through the eyes of Muslims. Only by understanding Islam's past and how it views itself can we understand what Islam desires for the future.

In this groundbreaking film, the total rejection of Israel by Muslim states since its inception in 1948 comes to light as a religious duty for it's believers. The Islamic roots of Anwar Sadats 1977 Camp David Accords with Israel are exposed as The Diplomatic Strategy Against Israel by which Egypt sought to defeat Israel through diplomacy, rather than establish Western Peace. Israel's misunderstanding of Islamic goals and values are highlighted by its enthusiasm for Yasser Arafat and the 1993 Oslo Accords which paved the way for today's flawed peace process. Finally, the Iranian strategic agenda for acquiring weapons of mass destruction to eliminate Israel comes clearly into focus.

Today, at the direction of Iran, Islamists are preparing for a fateful coming war for Islam - and Israel is the number one target and obstacle in the path of Islamic revival. Only with the return of Jews to their historic status as Dhimmi or Tributaries, tolerated and protected within Islamic society, can Islamic revival succeed - resulting in Islamic Peace, in the Middle East. Farewell Israel: Bush, Iran and The Revolt of Islam reaches the unavoidable conclusion that Western and Israeli misunderstanding of Islam is leading to a coming war - which will have devastating consequences for the West, and worst of all for Israel.

Apocalypse 2012 Investigation into Civilization's End

The thesis of this book is that the year 2012 will be pivotal, perhaps catastrophic, possibly revelatory, to a degree unmatched in human history.

  • Ancient Mayan prophecies based on two millennia of meticulous astronomical observations indicate that 12/21/12 will mark the birth of a new age, accompanied, as all births are, by blood and agony as well as hope and promise.

  • Since the 1940’s, and particularly, since 2003, the Sun has behaved more tumultuously than any time since the rapid global warming that accompanied the melting of the last Ice Age. Solar physicists concur that solar activity will next peak, at record-setting levels, in 2012.

  • Storms on the Sun are related to storms on the Earth. The great wave of 2005 hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma coincided with one of the stormiest weeks in the recorded history of the Sun.

  • The Earth’s magnetic field, our primary defense against harmful solar radiation, has begun to dwindle, with cracks comparable in scale to the ozone hole opening up randomly. A pole shift, in which such protection falls nearly to zero as the North and South magnetic poles reverse position, may well be under way.

  • Russian geophysicists believe that the Solar System has entered an interstellar energy cloud. This cloud is energizing and destabilizing the Sun and all the planets’ atmospheres. Their predictions for catastrophe resulting from the Earth’s encounter with this energy cloud range from 2010 to 2020.

  • Berkeley physicists, who discovered that the dinosaurs and 70% of all other species on Earth were extinguished by an impact 65 million years ago, maintain, with 99% certainty, that we are now overdue for another such mega-catastrophe.

  • The Yellowstone supervolcano, which erupts catastrophically every 600,000 to 700,000 years, is preparing to blow. The most recent eruption of comparable magnitude, at Lake Toba, Indonesia, 74,000 years ago, led to the death of more than 90% of the world’s population at the time.

  • Eastern philosophies such the I Ching, Chinese book of changes, and also Hindu theology, have been plausibly interpreted as supporting the 2012 end date, as have a range of indigenous belief systems.

  • At least one scholarly interpretation of the Bible predicts that the Earth will be annihilated in 2012. The burgeoning Armageddonist movement of Muslims, Christians and Jews actively seeks to precipitate the final End-Times battle.

  • Have a nice day.

    doomsday
Because there is a very real Satan the Devil. Jesus Christ twice called him the "ruler of this world" (John 12:31; 14:30). Satan is the great deceiver. The Apostle John made it very clear that Satan deceives the vast majority of mankind: "So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him" (Revelation 12:9).
"But I am not deceived!" you might say. Do not be too sure!
For we will now show you, in this booklet, what is undoubtedly the major deception that Satan has palmed off on mainstream Christianity! The widespread deception about the "Antichrist" is only the "tip of the iceberg" of the vast religious deception carried out in the name of "Christianity."

mother day - Poverty in the USA

    Mother's Day

Tell McCain about your education and training

Just in time for Mother's Day, Senator John McCain opposed the Fair Pay Act—a bill that would help guarantee women equal pay for equal work. The bill simply would have restored critical anti-discrimination rules that the Supreme Court struck down in a recent decision, and failed by just three votes.

Adding insult to injury, McCain said that the solution to employment discrimination was for women to get more "education and training."1 Maybe that made some sense in his day, but today with women outnumbering men on college campuses, it makes none. Study after study has shown that women are paid less than men for the same work, even when they have the same education and training. Senator McCain and his Republican allies have chosen to stand in the way of enforcement of a law that's been on the books protecting women for 40 years.

Call on Senator McCain and Congress to pass the Fair Pay Act now. Go to:

    http://pol.moveon.org/fairpay/?id=12626-8072211-_LqVeh&t=3

Our friends at MomsRising will deliver this petition to Senator McCain with
the media in tow, to make sure our message gets out. And if you're as incensed
as we are by McCain's statement that women are somehow poorly educated and trained,
you can do one more thing: Submit your resume when you sign the letter
and we'll deliver that too, so Senator McCain can see for himself that women
    are actually quite educated nowadays
    .

    http://pol.moveon.org/fairpay/?id=12626-8072211-_LqVeh&t=4

Pay equity is a serious issue that faces women and mothers all across America.
    Consider these key facts:

Women make less for the same work. On average, women who work full time
all year only make $0.77 for every dollar their male counterparts make.

The pay gap is even worse for mothers. Mothers only make $0.73 to a man's
dollar and single mothers only make about $0.60 to a man's dollar.

    • Wage discrimination cuts across educational levels. For example, for workers
25 years old or older who had some high school education, women's annual earnings
were around $15,162, compared to $24,092 for men. But even earning a bachelor's
degree didn't help. Women with a bachelor's degree made around $38,221 a year,
while men at the same level made $55,425

In some places, the pay gap has actually increased. A study
done by the U.S. Government Accounting Office found that women managers across
10 industries not only made less than their male counterparts, but in seven
of those industries the pay gap had actually increased between 1995 and 2001.

Our country has had an enforceable equal pay law from 1964 to May 2007, until
the Supreme Court ruled against Lilly Ledbetter. Lilly Ledbetter worked for
Goodyear Tire for 19 years, and got paid less than any man. She didn't learn
until near the end of her employment that she was earning less for the same
work. She sued and she won. But then the Supreme Court in a 5 to 4 decision
overturned her award saying she failed to bring her suit within 180 days of
the first discriminatory act. With this single stroke, they gutted the ability
to enforce the law. The Fair Pay Act simply restores the ability to enforce
a law that's been on the books for forty years. Senator McCain's statements
aren't just misinformed—they're a sad reminder that a lot of politicians are
totally out of touch with the hard realities facing working women. Please speak
    out today.

    Poverty in the USA

    By: Leon Felkins

    Written: 1/8/1999 -- Revised 1/13/2001

    Introduction

This essay is an introduction to the concept of poverty, its prevalence in the United States, and the various government efforts that have attempted to diminish it -- or so they claim.

    Definition of Poverty

"Poverty" is a vague term just like "fat", "tall", "smart", "friendly", etc. and is therefore is not precisely definable. The range from having everything to having nothing is a continuous spectrum with no obvious point that is clearly seen to be the point where "adequate" becomes "inadequate". [Consult my essay, "Dilemmas of Ambiguity and Vagueness" for a discussion of vagueness in some detail].

The fact that "poverty" is a vague term and cannot be defined precisely, does not, of course, stop the government from using the word as if it were precise and the press going along with the scam, as is their way. In fact the government is not beyond declaring that poverty has increased or that it has decreased when the primary factor in the increase or decrease may be that the government has simply changed its definition of poverty.

So, the criteria for a person being in or out of poverty is simply a measurement of some major component of poverty and comparing it to some arbitrary level. The commonly used component is "salary" as it is relatively easy to determine compared to other factors that could be more meaningful but more difficult to measure. According to the online essay, "The Meaning and Measurement of Poverty", by Simon Maxwell, a popular definition of poverty for the rest of the world is an income of less than one US dollar per day.

Of course, that definition will not do in the USA for to accept that would put a lot of people out of work; the many employees of the many government agencies that thrive based on a very liberal definition of poverty, to say nothing about the massive allocation of funds to the "poor" that Congress so enthusiasticly dispenses.

Therefore, the poverty level in the USA is set much higher and is more complex than that simple criteria of $1 per day. As of 1999, the threshold for poverty for a family of four was an annual income of $17,029. The poverty threshold varies by size and "number of related children" from $8,501 for one person to $34,417 for a family of 9 or more. The chart is online at the Census Bureau's Poverty Thresholds: 1999.

Since "poverty" is not absolute but a relative term, one has to wonder how does this definition of poverty compare with how we used to define poverty and how others countries of the world still define it. Robert Rector has made a detailed and very well documented study of this very question in his online paper, "How 'Poor' are America's Poor?" and the update, "THE MYTH OF WIDESPREAD AMERICAN POVERTY". Some interesting comparison's surface (as of 1990, the date of the original article):

  • In the 1920s, over half of the families would have been officially "poor" by today's standard (adjusted for inflation).
  • The average "poor" American lives in a bigger house or apartment, eats far more meat, owns more appliances, has more amenities such as indoor toilets, than the average European (note that "average" includes all, not just the poor).
  • Today's poor are more likely to own common appliances such as televisions and refrigerators than the average family in the 1950s.
  • Government reports show that the poor actually spend 2 to 3 times as much as their official income. Amazing!
  • As a group, the "poor" are far from being chronically hungry and malnourished. In fact, poor persons are more likely to be overweight than are middle-class persons. Nearly half of poor adult women a overweight. Most poor children today are in fact super-nourished, growing up to be, on average, one inch taller and ten pounds heavier that the GIs who stormed the beaches of Normandy in World War II.

    Trends and Statistics

The present massive level of spending on welfare for the poor started with the President Johnson in 1964 when he declared his "War on Poverty". Since that time there has been an estimated $7 trillion spent on this "war" with no noticeable impact on the poverty rate, as reported by the Census Bureau. Obviously the government can make these numbers come out anyway they want so we can only conclude that the reported constant rate of poverty is in the best interest of the massive bureaucracy who's jobs depend on this program continuing. If the poverty rate was shown to be declining then that would mean that we could start cutting back the program. Of course that would never do. On the other hand, if the rate was shown to be increasing, then that would show that the program was failing and we can't have that either. Better to just keep it constant!

The most comprehensive paper on the history of the welfare program is an essay, one of many, by Robert Rector, probably the most well known expert on welfare and poverty. The essay is online and is called "Welfare, Expanding the Reform" and can be read directly or downloaded as a PDF file. This paper is a must read for it describes in well documented detail what a tragic program this has been -- the massive expenditures, the lack of any progress, and the destruction of millions of lives. I give you one very telling quote: ".. the $6.98 trillion cost of the War on Poverty nearly equals the entire cost of the private-sector industrial and business infrastructure of the United States".

    From ADFC to TANF

Due to public pressure, the politicians will periodically start new programs to "reform" the welfare mess. No matter what they say, there are two things you can always count on when there is a "reform": there will be no significant improvement and the cost will go up.

In 1996, the Republican congress managed to get President Clinton to sign a bill (he fought it all the way, but then later took full credit for it!) that would significantly change the way some parts of welfare was being doled out by the government. The "Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act" (PRWOR) of 1996 (Public Law 104-193, better known as the Welfare Reform Act) was signed by Clinton on August 22, 1996. In summary (from Municipal Research & Services Center):
This law changes how governmental financial assistance is administered including: changing federal funding to states from an open-ended entitlement to a series of capped block grant allocations; sets time limits on entitlements and cash assistance to welfare recipients; requires most welfare recipients to engage in job activities (this includes work experience, community service, job training, vocational education); changes the disability definitions for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for children who apply; mandates states to establish methods to enforce collection of unpaid parental child support; denies many legal immigrants from collecting SSI and food stamps; consolidates all child care programs into the Child Care and Development Block Grant, and changes foodstamp recertification requirements.

The major change brought on by the bill was that the 61-year-old Aid to
    Families with Dependent Children (AFDC)
program was repealed and replaced with a federal block grant program called Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), which imposed time limits and work requirements on welfare recipients. Note however, the AFDC/TANF is just one, relatively small, component of the total welfare system in the US.

This so-called "Welfare-to-Work" program has been successful in moving many people off the welfare dole. Dr. Rector acknowledges in his essay mentioned above that, while the results vary tremendously from state to state, there has been some qualified success in getting some people off welfare. However, as Lisa E. Oliphant shows in her essay, "Four Years of Welfare Reform: A Progress Report", most of this gain is just the usual "smoke and mirrors" so routine with the government. Just as there was no decline in Welfare spending in the Reagan regime, as was so profoundly proclaimed by the politicians and the press, there is no real reduction in Welfare spending now. In fact, welfare spending is growing at twice the inflation rate and is expected to continue that trend indefinitely.

One other factor that helps explain why the much touted success of the PRWOR act made no impact in the growth of welfare costs is that the TANF program that it invoked is only one of over 75 federal welfare programs and numerous state programs. That fact is never mentioned by the politicians and their cohorts, the press.

    Conclusion

Just like almost every other social problem that the government tries to solve, the results of the "War on Poverty" has been a massive disaster. After $7 billion of wasted expenditures (more than twice the cost of World War II!), the number of official poor remains fairly constant. But the story is much worse: millions of people are now on the morale destroying dependency on the government, the institution of marriage among African Americans has been essentially destroyed, criminal activity among welfare recipients is much higher than among the working poor, and education is a total failure. It would be easy to conclude that this was done on purpose for how else could such a damaging program be enthusiastically continued.

It is so obvious to anyone with half a brain (which apparently excludes most politicians) that the "War on Poverty" approach can only make things worse. To illustrate, I will quote form Rector's paper:

The welfare system that has existed for the past 30 years may best be conceptualized as a system that offered each single mother with two children a "paycheck" of combined benefits worth an average of between $8,500 and $15,000, depending on the state. The mother had a contract with the government. She would continue to receive her "paycheck" as long as she fulfilled two conditions:

    1.She must not work.

2.She must not marry an employed male.

That is just one example of the logic used in the government's welfare programs but it is very representative of every other aspect of their programs.

For an in depth look at the logic and the follies of the government's efforts to "help" the poor, see my essay, "Poverty's Paradoxes and Intractable Dilemmas".

    http://www.barackobama.com/

Over the last few decades, too many American families have worked hard their whole lives only to find that sometimes the game is rigged against them. Too many rungs have been removed from the ladder to middle-class security, and the safety net that's supposed to break any falls has grown badly frayed. Many families face increased anxiety when it comes to paying medical bills or balancing their home and work life or finding ways to send their children to college. At the same time, others have tumbled into poverty, watching jobs disappear, and the chances for their children's success slip further and further away.

Providing these families with the same chances that previous generations have had is a daunting challenge, but it is certainly one we can meet. Barack Obama will bring the much needed leadership and vision to Washington to finally restore the promise of the American Dream to all American families.

Dick Cheney's=John McCain's Quagmire in Iraq

Endless war on the installment plan

This video makes it clear: No matter what happens in Iraq, the Bush Administration and John McCain always have the same answer: 6 more months.

They're at it again this week, asking for six more months. But six months won't change anything—except the body count and the price tag.

So please forward this video to your friends, and let's keep the pressure on to bring our troops home.
