President Obama has decided to send more than 30,000 extra troops to Afghanistan, at a cost of more than $100 billion/year$. But America cannot afford a war that does not make us safer, and Congress has the power to stop the escalation. Vote NO on any spending bill that would send more troops to Afghanistan.

WASHINGTON D.C. TUESDAY 22 JULY Eighteen members of Congress have sent a letter to Dow Chairman William Stavropoulos demanding that his company assume liability for the wrongdoings of Union Carbide (its 100% subsidiary) in Bhopal. The Congresspersons, led by Representatives Frank Pallone and Dennis Kucinich are demanding that Dow provide medical rehabilitation and economic reparations for the victims of the tragedy; clean up contamination in and around the former factory site in Bhopal; provide alternative supplies of fresh water to the affected communities and ensure that the Union Carbide Corporation appears before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Bhopal where

http://www.flickr.com/photos/chasingfun/514508627/ http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/12/do-ipods-cause-cyclist-deaths.php?campaign=daily_nl Certainly there are horrific stories of cyclists killed - and though no proof is given in reports like this one, it could be plausibly inferred that an iPod blocked out some life-saving sound indications of trouble. Yet in fact, this is putting the blame solely on the cyclist, when the actual statistics tend to indicated that it is "clumsy or inattentive drivers" that are to blame in 90% of bike-car accidents. And 90% of cyclist deaths are in connection with an accident with a motor vehicle, according to Ken Kifer's Bike Pages. But before we go ahead and ban iPod listening while cycling, shouldn't we take a more comprehensive look at cell phone use and texting while driving, a seemingly grave threat not only to cyclists health, but also to pedestrians' well-being? Way back in 2002, the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis calculated that 2,600 people die each year as a result of cell phone use during driving. In the UK a study last year found texting was more dangerous than drinking while driving. And in fact, a North Carolina a law went into effect yesterday putting a $100 fine on texting while driving. A similar NC statute prohibiting mobile phone use is only in effect for teenagers and school bus drivers. Chicago has a law against mobile use while driving going back to 2005, and recently increased the penalty. Elizabeth at Bike Commuters says the National Safety Council is planning to lobby for a nationwide cell phone use ban. It seems equally to be common sense to not text while driving as it is to not listen to an iPod while on a cycle needing to be attentive to traffic noises. One solution for cyclists would be to only keep one earplug in while on regular roads. Or how about the Slip - holds the ear buds away from the ears and keeps your ears warm at the same time. However, recently it seems like the anti-cyclist rhetoric has lately cranked up a notch. Or is it simply that there are more people cycling and thus more chances for motorist-cyclist interactions? In Philadelphia, two pedestrian deaths caused by cyclists have turned the mood against cycling quite sour - bills have been proposed - one putting at $1,000 fine on riding a fixie bike. Another piece of legislation calls for increasing the fine for riding on the sidewalk from $10 to $300, while another puts the fine for riding while wearing headphones to $300. City Council is also proposing to register bikes. Is this the answer to cyclist-motorist-pedestrian tensions?

toss aside case from Arpaio, Thomas
Chief Judge
United States District Court
District of Arizona
Dear Judge Roll,
A piece of unsolicited advice. It's about that little racketeering lawsuit that
just landed on your desk. The one from Maricopa County Attorney Andy Thomas and his partner in (ahem) crime, Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
Do yourself a favor and put it in a basket marked Things to Do . . . in
2012. We know the wheels of justice can turn slowly in some cases. It might be well to let the wheels on this baby rust a bit.
On its face, the lawsuit seems to allege some kind of wicked conspiracy between the Board of Supervisors and their cackling henchmen, the Superior Court judiciary. Especially that clever minx, Presiding Judge Barbara Rodriguez Mundell.
It cites their fiendish plot to build a new Superior Court Tower. It also accuses the supervisors of sweeping their offices of listening devices, denying Andy and Joe the pleasure of surveillance had they eventually wanted to bug some
supervisor's lampshade.
If you don't know about this last item, best don't ask. It's just too weird.
And they also are suing the supervisors' private lawyers for having the unmitigated gall to make money off the ongoing legal chaos in Maricopa County government. Can you believe it? Lawyers grubbing for money?
So - again, wholly unsolicited - we think it wise to gather up all your federal judges over in that glass-encased ice palace of yours and . . . run for your professional lives. They're nuts. They're all nuts. And so will you be nuts if you consider this lawsuit for more than the millisecond or two it takes to drop it in your " 2012" basket.
Here is what you have on your desk right now: Andy Thomas' counter-poke back at County Manager David Smith.
Smith has refused to allow Thomas to hire a pair of Washington, D.C., glitterati lawyers to investigate board members for . . . alleged criminal stuff. Before that, Smith created his own legal department, thus removing virtually the entire civil division from Thomas' purview. And, before that . . .
You get the picture? From a distance, the madcap mayhem in Maricopa County governance is entertaining. Sort of like watching a knife-thrower fling his blades at the pretty woman on the spinning platform from 30 feet away.
Take up this case, Judge Roll, and you become that pretty woman. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/opinions/articles/2009/12/02/20091202wed1-02.html

Pressure is building on Myanmar's leaders to release Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. Military rulers jailed Suu Kyi and thousands more in an effort to crush all dissent against the government.
Help free Suu Kyi and other high profile human rights defenders during Amnesty International's Global Write-a-thon, the world's largest letter writing event, December 5-13th.
The more letters we send, the better chance we have at setting Aung San Suu Kyi free. Please pledge to write a letter on behalf of Aung San Suu Kyi:
Yes, I will write a letter!
In the days surrounding International Human Rights Day - December 10 - Amnesty's global network of activists will send a tidal wave of letters and postcards on behalf of individuals in danger of severe human rights abuse.
We want to make this the best Write-a-thon ever! During last year's Global Write-a-thon, more than 7,000 people in the U.S. pledged to write 200,000 letters in support of our cases. Every year, this worldwide event gets bigger and bigger -- and we expect to top all records this time around.
We've seen prisoners freed and lives spared because your letters make things happen! Just last year, Ma Khin Khin Leh, a school teacher in Myanmar and Hana
Abdi, a women's rights advocate in Iran, were both released from prison after Write-a-thon letters overwhelmed their respective government offices.
Together, we can bring justice and human rights back to people who need it. Join the Global Write-a-thon today and show the world that when you stand up for human rights, you never stand alone. http://www.amnestyusa.org/writeathon/cases.php

Union carbide factory..a rusting hulk of metal and pipes. You will see the storage tank known as '610' which is where the deadly chemical reaction first started. We walk through the grounds that are overgrown with weeds and thorny bushes,
past the derelict concrete buildings where many of the chemicals were stored. The perimeter wall is only 100 yards or so from the holding tanks and backing this broken boundary are the shacks of those who still live in the shadow of the factory. This was the worst hit community...with bodies all over the streets and the train line some 50 yards further ...my guide told me his father said that a train rolled by that night and cut thru these victims as they lay dead on the tracks. On the train itself very few survived...this has haunted his father for all these and he can longer talk about it.. almost as if the memory
gets stronger. Next to the train tracks are 1000 gallon black water tanks that hold nothing ..the taps are dry and the residents here asked me to complain as no one listens to them!.. http://www.youtube.com/user/BhopalMedicalAppeal
production facilities in the world.
Union Carbide primarily produces chemicals and polymers that undergo one or more further conversions by customers before reaching consumers. Some of these
materials are high-volume commodities, while others are specialty products meeting the needs of smaller market niches. The end-uses served include paints and coatings, packaging, wire and cable, household products, personal care, pharmaceuticals, automotive, textiles, agriculture and oil and gas.
The hallmark of Union Carbide's leadership in the chemical industry is a sustained tradition of technological innovation. In 1920 our researchers developed an
economical way to make ethylene from natural gas, giving birth to the modern petrochemicals industry. A significant day in Union Carbide’s recent history was August 4, 1999, when it was announced that Union Carbide would become a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company (“TDCC”) as part of a transaction valued at $11.6 billion. This transaction closed on February 6, 2001. Since Union Carbide’s acquisition by TDCC, Union Carbide sells most of the products it manufactures to TDCC and is an important part of the Dow family of companies. http://www.dow.com/
[1], between 2.1 and 4.8 millions Vietnamese people were directly exposed to herbicides from 1961 to1971. One needs to add to this figure an unknown number of Cambodians, Laotians, American civilians and soldiers, and their various allies from Australia, Canada, New-Zealand and South-Korea. However, the total number of victims goes probably beyond because dioxin can be transmitted by contamination of the food chain : breast milk, cow milk, consumption of contaminated meat and fish.

Zombies are everywhere in
pop culture these days, even having infiltrated TreeHugger. There are not a lot of zombies, however, riding the roads completely fixated on their iPods and thus being inattentive to road conditions, and inadvertently killing themselves. There can't be, because zombies, as most of us know, are already dead. And since they feast on human flesh, why would they be riding cycles and listening to iPods? Still, this article seems to infer that it is iPod listening that is leading to a rise in cycling deaths in Britain.
