What is a Community Area Plan?
A Community Area Plan is a tool used to guide future development and redevelopment of an area. It includes long-range goals, policies, important community topics ranging from sustainability, to economic vitality, to land use and transportation.

San Francisco

I have to say I don't see much evidence that things have changed at Parking and Traffic in a big way. They've changed some small ways, said Tom Radulovich, the executive director of Livable City. They're not managing the streets the way the city charter says they should be managing the streets. They're all cars, all the time. So in that sense, I think the structure of the MTA is a real failure. Indeed, MTA's veteran traffic engineers continue to favor an archaic Level of Service metric over transit, bicyclists and pedestrians. Walk or ride a bike anywhere in the city and it's apparent cars still rule.

denny am a stroke survivor and deal daily with a speech disorder called Aphasia. This disorder is a result of my stroke in 2005. Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder that impairs a person's ability to process language, but does not affect intelligence. Aphasia impairs the ability to speak and understand others, and most people with aphasia experience difficulty reading and writing. I am fortunate to be able to understand other's speech and read. I have what is called expresive aphasia sometimes referred to as Tip of the Tongue Phenomenom. I know what I want to say, can often draw an image or create gestures and sound effects, but I cannot find the proper words. I am thankful God has given me the ability to express myself through my images and films.

(2008 Scottsdale Transportation Master Plan Elements)

2. New development should not destabilize an existing neighborhood nor should assemblages of existing neighborhoods be encouraged.

3. Environmental protection and site planning that is sensitive to environmental features is encouraged through open space links and preservation, a Scenic Corridor, single story buildings adjacent to the Shea Scenic Corridor, retention of washes in a natural condition, and conformance with the ESLO. (Indian Bend Wash)

4. Provide an efficient road network and promote alternative modes of travel by building Shea Boulevard according to anticipated traffic demands and following the Shea Blvd. Transportation/Access Policy(Arterial/Arterial Median Break Policy); maximizing the trail system by providing safe and convenient access to areas north and south of Shea Blvd.

Bicycle Friendly Communities ?????

Scottsdale, AZ | Silver Level ????

Education: Community motorists are reached through a variety of educational formats. Bike Lane , Bike Route, and Share the Road signs are used throughout Scottsdale to remind motorists to expect bicyclists on our streets. The Chief of Police has a weekly 30-minute television show on the cable television. Bicycling is a regular topic and members of the Coalition of Arizona Bicyclists have been guests. Officers from the Scottsdale Bike Unit have also appeared to demonstrate bicycle safety. The city and coalition developed a public service announcement on Arizonas three-foot passing law. The PSA gets regular airing and was distributed to other agencies around Arizona for their use.

Engineering:Scottsdale is aggressively expanding and improving its bicycle network with an investment of more than $3 million per year in new facilities. Scottsdale has a full-time transportation planner position dedicated to bicycling issues. One quarter of the citys arterials streets have bike lanes and those lanes are swept every seven days to clear away glass and debris. The 81-mile network of bike lanes is complemented with more than 300 miles of trails, including the spectacular Indian Bend Wash. The Wash is much more than just a few miles of path. This greenbelt is one of the nations most well known flood-control projects. Seven-and-a-half miles of parkland provide lakes, golf courses, many recreational facilities, and an extensive multi-use path system for skating, biking, walking, and jogging. The Wash was once an eroded eyesore running through the center of the community. Scottsdale has made the Indian Bend Wash Greenbelt an integral part of its outdoor lifestyle. Due to the citys linear shape, about 80 percent of Scottsdale citizens are within walking distance of the Wash. An estimated one million people make use of the Greenbelt annually.

Evaluation:The city has a very good crash analysis, and strong long-range planning for bicycling, with active bicyclists are involved at all levels of government. Cyclists are on the City Council ??, the Transportation Commission ??, and the staff. Bicycling is an environmental value demonstrated and supported in the community ???
